A massive open online course (MOOC /muːk/) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive user forums to support community interactions between students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs). MOOCs are a recent and widely researched development in distance education  which was first introduced in 2008 and emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012.

  4. Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan to provide "a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere". The organization produces micro lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world.

  5. Stanford Online is an educational initiative launched by Stanford University which offers a variety of professional education opportunities. As a part of Stanford Online, Stanford University created an open access OpenEdX platform which offers a variety of Massive Open Online Courses.

  6. Eliademy [əlɪaˈdəmi] is a free online classroom that allows educators and students to create, share and manage online courses with real-time discussions and task management. Eliademy is based on Moodle (support import of course in Moodle format), Twitter Bootstrap and other open source technologies. Eliademy was unveiled to public in February 2013 by CBTec. Eliademy is available in 32 languages.

  7. Instructure is an educational technology company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the developer of the Canvas learning management system, which is a comprehensive cloud-native software package that competes with such systems as Desire2Learn, the Blackboard Learning System, Moodle, Chamilo, and the Sakai Project. Instructure also developed Canvas Network, a massive open online course platform.

  8. One Month is an online accelerated learning platform largely featuring technology-based courses. The company currently provides online tutorials for Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, Growth Hacking, iOS, Stripe (company), Web Security and Programming for Non-Programmers. One Month has more than 20,000 students, including employees from Google, Bloomberg L.P., Singularity University and School of Visual Arts.

  9. OpenLearning is a for-profit educational technology company offering a social online learning platform that can deliver massive open online courses (MOOCs). OpenLearning was founded in Australia by computer science professor Richard Buckland and software engineer Adam Brimo from the University of New South Wales. OpenLearning has worked with the University of New South Wales and Taylor's University to deliver the first MOOCs in Australia and Malaysia respectively.

  10. Udacity is a for-profit educational organization founded by Sebastian Thrun, David Stavens, and Mike Sokolsky offering massive open online courses (MOOCs). According to Thrun, the origin of the name Udacity comes from the company's desire to be "audacious for you, the student". While it originally focused on offering university-style courses, it now focuses more on vocational courses for professionals.

  11. Academic Earth is a website launched on March 24, 2009, by Richard Ludlow and co-founders Chris Bruner and Liam Pisano, which offers free online video lectures from universities such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale in the subjects of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, English, Entrepreneurship, History, Law, Mathematics, Medicine, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, and Statistics.

  12. FutureLearn is a massive open online course (MOOC) learning platform founded in December 2012 as a company wholly owned by The Open University in Milton Keynes, England. It is the first UK-led massive open online course learning platform, and as of March 2015 included 54 UK and international University partners and—-unlike similar platforms—-includes four non-university partners: the British Museum, the British Council, the British Library and the National Film and Television School.

  13. Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU) is a nonprofit online open learning community which allows users to organize and participate in courses and study groups to learn about specific topics. Peer 2 Peer University was started in 2009 with funding from the Hewlett Foundation and the Shuttleworth Foundation, with its first of courses in September of that year. An example of the "edupunk" approach to education, P2PU charges no tuition and courses are not accredited. However, some courses in "The School of Webcraft" provide the opportunity for recognition of achievements through the Open Badges project.

  14. The Saylor Foundation (under its legal name, The Constitution Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC. It was established in 1999 by its sole trustee, Michael J. Saylor, who is Chairman, CEO, and President of the business intelligence company MicroStrategy. Since 2008, the focus of the foundation has been its Free Education Initiative which has led to the creation of 241 courses representing 10 of the highest enrollment majors in the US. Saylor is the author of the new book, The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything, which extols the open education movement.

  15. Udemy.com is a platform or marketplace for online learning. Unlike academic MOOC programs driven by traditional collegiate coursework, Udemy provides a platform for experts of any kind to create courses which can be offered to the public, either at no charge or for a tuition fee. Udemy provides tools which enable users to create a course, promote it and earn money from student tuition charges.

  16. The Massive Open Online English Course (MOOEC) launched in November 2013 was the first dedicated English as a Second Language (ESL) MOOC. The free non for profit resource featured more than 50 free lessons at launch, developed by 15 Queensland colleges and universities including the University of Queensland ITCE, Griffith University GELI, Queensland University of Technology and many private providers. The platform on which MOOEC is built is aimed at the next generation of language learning technology and incorporates components of Artificial Intelligence and advanced user interactivity.

  17. NovoEd is a for-profit educational technology company, founded by Stanford University professor Amin Saberi and PhD student Farnaz Ronaghi, that partners with universities, foundations, and corporations to offer massive open online courses (MOOCs) as well as small private online courses (SPOCS). Launched originally as Venture Lab, it rebranded to its present name in 2013. Like many other online learning platforms, students view lecture videos online as individuals, but NovoEd's unique selling point is that students can collaborate in small teams and submit assignments with classmates around the world. The company claims to have found success and higher completion rate with this focus on collaboration. Investors include Costanoa Venture Capital and Stanford University.

  18. WizIQ is a SaaS-based online education platform, connecting educators and learners for live and self-paced courses. 300,000 active educators and 3.7 million registered learners from more than 100 countries use the company’s platform. WizIQ was founded with the vision of providing all people with access to quality education. This vision is driven by the idea that online learning can be just as powerful as traditional classroom learning, with unique benefits of its own. The company is unique in that it allows educators and learners to choose from live online, self-paced and blended courses—offering the industry’s most comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS), Virtual Classroom, and the WizIQ Learning Marketplace, the only global education marketplace to offer live interactive online learning.

  19. France Digital University (FUN) is the French national platform presented via web portal for promoting the use of open and massive online courses (designated in English by MOOC, massive open online course). The actual courses are hosted by a different platform and portal accessible by all free after registration. Technically, the portal is supported by the open platform open source edX provided by one of the giants of the sector that is the American edX and supported by Google since September 2013, France Digital University remains completely independent of these website last.

  20. Miríada X is an online training project which originated in early 2013 by Banco Santander and Telefonica, through the Universia Network and Telefónica Digital Education and based on free software platform WEMOOC. Offers massive online courses and open (Massive Open Online Courses, MOOCs) free and suitable for all users interested in the content. In 2014, Miríada X was attended by 45 universities in nine countries: Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and El Salvador; more than 1,000 teachers and 195 courses offered.
